LANCASTER, PA - Senior Miku White (Great Mills, MD/Great Mills) and freshman Kelcy Bye (Parkton, MD/Hereford) teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles then went on to victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, to pace College of Notre Dame to a 5-4 season opening victory at Lancaster Bible Tuesday afternoon.
White and Bye teamed up to best the pair of Brianna Funk and Carolyn Kensinger, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. White followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kensinger at No. 1 singles followed by a just as stellar performance from Bye, who defeated Funk by a 6-4, 6-1 score at No. 2 singles in her collegiate debut.
Sophomore Steph Thackoordeen (Baltimore/Kenwood) along with senior teammate Manda Hollister (Meshoppen, PA/Elk Lake) earned an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles over Kelsey Scott and Michelle Ringler to also help lead Notre Dame to victory.
In other action, Ashley Bell and Becky Griffes squeaked by Stephanie Uza (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley) and Madeleine Foster (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. Foster also suffered a tough defeat to Ringler at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 2-6. Hollister fell to Rohksan Ghaziaskar 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, while Uza was topped by Kayla Scott, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
Notre Dame will next travel to Cabrini for its Colonial States Athletic Conference opener on Thursday, September 10 at 3:30 p.m. The Gators will then play their home opener on Saturday, September 12 versus CSAC foe Cedar Crest at 12 p.m.
