BALTIMORE, Md. – Field hockey opened Notre Dame's 2019 home schedule Saturday afternoon. Hosting the Southern Virginia University Knights, the Gators shutout SVU, 3-0 for their season opening victory.
New this season, NCAA moved field hockey from halves to quarters similar to Women's basketball several years ago. Teams now play in four 15-minute quarters versus the two 35 minute halves in previous season.
In her NDMU debut,
Maia Giafes got the Gators on the board early, scoring the team's opening goal in the first five minutes of play.
The Gators scored in three of the four quarters.
Early in the second quarter, sophomore
Katie Hawkins extended the NDMU lead, scoring off a corner assisted by sophomore
Kelsey Campbell.
To seal the Notre Dame victory, newcomer
Hailey Lockard notched her first career goal for the Gators, scoring off a long shot past the goalie.
The Gators outshot the Knights 13-0, while also seeing nine corners in the game.
