ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Gators traveled to the Philadelphia suburbs to face Rosemont College in a Saturday doubleheader. Notre Dame of Maryland was Looking to snap out of six-game losing streak, but came up short, 12-0, and 6-1.
Game 1
Maci Lopez took the mound in game one to help lighten the load a little put on sophomore,
Jessie Leatherwood, who has started every game this season. Coming into today she had pitched all but 3.1 innings for the Gators.
Lopez, who toed the rubber for the first time earlier in the week against Clarks Summit, might still be adjusting to the new role, hitting the first batter of the game, but then inducing three quick outs.
In the second, twos were wild. Lopez hit two more batters, walked two, and struck out two. There were two stolen bases by the Ravens as well. They sprinkled in four hits and ended the second with a 6-0 lead.
Lopez settled down in the third as she posted three strikeouts and allowed just two baserunners, neither one scoring.
In the top of the fourth it looked like the Gators could get something going with Jessie Leatherwood leading off with a double. After a
Miranda Burton fly out,
Kayla Grube got a base hit. But a strike out and a pop up to first ended the threat. Two of the Gators three total hits in game one came in the fourth inning.
In the home half, Rosemont put the game out of reach, plating six more runs on eight hits.
The Gators were retired in order in the fifth to close game one, 12-0.
Game 2
Leatherwood was back in the pitcher's circle for game two, and the rest may have benefited the lefty. She didn't allow a hit through the first three innings. The Gator bats were not able to back her up though, as they recorded one hit of their own through their first six times to the plate.
Rosemont started to break through with two runs in the fourth. Added another run in the fifth, and three in the sixth, taking a 6-0 lead. The Gators avoided giving up the "big inning" that has haunted them in some losses. But a few little innings added up.
In the seventh, Leatherwood kept the Gators from being blanked on the day by roping an RBI double, scoring Samantha Gamble. It cut the lead to 6-1, which would be the final score.
Leatherwood was more efficient, throwing 103 pitches in six innings of work. Last time out versus Clarks Summit, it took 159 pitches to get through 6.1 innings.
