Gators Battle Defenders to Spilt

BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame (MD) softball team split their CSAC double header with Clarks Summit University on Sunday, Apr. 16. The Gators fell 10-0 in game one before bouncing back for a 15-0 win in game two.

GAME 1
The Gators (8-11 Overall; 3-4 CSAC) struggled to find any hits, being held to just four hits throughout the six-inning game. Meanwhile, the Defenders (7-14 Overall; 1-4 CSAC) got rolling in the third inning, scoring five runs. Clarks Summit tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth inning, stretching the lead to ten runs.

NDMU looked to try to stay alive in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jessie Leatherwood led off the inning by blasting a single up the middle. Ciarra Bockstie followed with a single of her own, but the Gators could not bring in a run, falling 10-0.

GAME 2
The Gators (9-11 Overall; 4-4 CSAC) were a completely different team in game two for the doubleheader, with the team plating seven runs in the first inning. Aggressive base running by Emma Livingston started the rally, with Livingston swiping third and then scoring on a throwing error. Later in the inning, Bethani Newbold punched a ball through the middle, driving in a run. Lilyian Hafner then hit a hard ground ball, allowing the third run of the inning to score. Two errors and a walk loaded the bases for Candace Forgach-Aguilar. Forgach-Aguilar smacked a single through the left side, giving NDMU a 5-0 lead. Livingston capped off the scoring blasting a two RBI double into center field.

NDMU continued scoring in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Scarlett Miller blasted a single through the left side, scoring a run. Later in the inning, Hafner scored on a wild pitch, giving the Gators a 9-0 lead. The Gators tacked on five runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Newbold, Forgach-Aguilar and Livingston each drove in runs.

In the circle for the Gators, Leatherwood was dominant. She pitched all 5.0 innings, only allowing two hits while striking out 11 batters.
