Gators Earn Walk-Off Victory Over SUNY Morrisville

Little River, SC– The Notre Dame of Maryland University softball team continued play on its spring break trip, earning a walk-off 5-4 victory over SUNY Morrisville in game one. NDMU battled Scranton University in game two, falling in a hard-fought contest by a score of 5-1.  

GAME 1 

The Gators used a strong third inning to take an early lead against SUNY Morrisville. Anabelle Hafner led off with a double down the right field line, advancing to third on a wild pitch. One pitch later Hafner scored on another wild pitch. After Jessie Leatherwood walked, Bethani Newbold doubled to left field putting runners on second and third. Another wild pitch allowed both Leatherwood and Newbold to score giving NDMU a 3-0 lead.  

Starting pitcher Gena Donalds produced another quality outing, going 6.0 innings allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four Mustangs. NDMU added another run in the fifth inning. After Je. Leatherwood worked a walk, Newbold singled through the right side, with both runners moving into scoring position on an error. Je. Leatherwood would then score on a wild pitch to give the Gators a 4-0 advantage.  

The Mustangs battled back, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning to level the game at four. NDMU looked to answer in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lilyian Hafner led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and the Gators turned to Emily Gordon to pinch run. Gordon swiped second base, putting herself in scoring position. Charlene Torres blasted a ball on the right side, forcing an error that allowed Gordon to race around the base and score, giving the Gators the victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Newbold finished the game 2-4 with a run scored.  

  • Je. Leatherwood went 1-2 with two runs scored, drawing two walks in the process.  

  • Donalds had another excellent outing in the circle, going 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits while striking out four batters.  

GAME 2 
The Gators turned to Je. Leatherwood to pitch game two of the doubleheader against Scranton University, and she put on an outstanding performance. Leatherwood kept the Royals off the scoreboard for the first four innings, allowing eight hits in the game while striking out 11 batters.  

NDMU struggled to string together hits but did plate the first run of the day in the top of the fifth inning. Bethany Steers and Candace Forgach-Aguilar each recorded a single, putting the Gators in scoring position. Later in the inning, Je. Leatherwood doubled to right field, scoring Forgach-Aguilar to put the Gators ahead 1-0. Scranton answered back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away and earn the 5-1 victory.

The Gators will return to action when they take on Gwynedd Mercy and Vermont St. Castleton on Thursday, Mar. 14.
