Gators Take One at Schuylkill

Schuylkill Haven, Pa.– The Notre Dame of Maryland University softball team spilt a doubleheader with Penn St. Schuylkill on Tuesday, Mar. 26. The Gators took game one 4-2 before dropping the nightcap 3-1.

GAME 1

The Gators got off to a strong start, grabbing the lead in the top of the first inning. Julianna Leatherwood singled and stole second base. Jessie Leatherwood drew a walk, putting a pair of runners on base for Charlene Torres. Torres crushed her first home run in an NDMU jersey over the left field fence, putting the Gators ahead 3-0.

NDMU continued to roll in the second inning. Bethani Newbold led off the inning by lining a single into right field. Bethany Steers then drew a walk, putting two runners on base. Anabelle Hafner smacked a ground ball up the middle and while the Lions second baseman held it in the infield, an error on a throw allowed Newbold to score and give NDMU the 4-0 lead.

The four-run lead was plenty for pitcher Malorie Gogel who was outstanding in her second career start. Gogel pitched all 7.0 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits while striking out two Lions. After Schuylkill plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning, Gogel held the Lions without a baserunner in the sixth and seventh innings, securing the 4-2 victory.

GAME 2

NDMU's offense cooled off in game two of the doubleheader, as they were held without a hit in the first three innings. Meanwhile, Schuylkill hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead.

The Gators tried to battle back in the top of the sixth inning. Ju. Leatherwood reached on an error and then Je. Leatherwood launched a double off the right center fence, allowing her to score from first base. NDMU had one final chance to get back in the game in the seventh inning. Kayla Bright reached on an error and Eleanor Flores singled to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. NDMU could not complete the late rally, falling by a score of 3-1.
