Morristown, NJ– The Notre Dame of Maryland University softball team was swept by Saint Elizabeth University in their road matchup on Wednesday, Apr. 24.
GAME 1
The Gators scored first, plating a run in the top of the first inning. With two outs in the inning, Jessie Leatherwood drew a walk. Charlene Torres smacked a single and on a throwing error, Leatherwood was able to hustle around the bases and score. The Eagles answered, scoring one run in the bottom of the inning. NDMU struck again in the second inning. Makayla Lopez started the rally, hitting a double down the right field line. Bethany Steer singled and then on an error advanced to second while Lopez was able to score. Anabelle Hafner then recorded an infield single allowing Steers to score. Julianna Leatherwood singled to put a pair of runners on base. Je. Leatherwood smacked a ball toward second, causing an error that allowed A. Hafner to score and put NDMU ahead 4-1.
Saint Elizabeth scored in the second and third innings to close back within a single run. NDMU drove in a run in the top of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Je. Leatherwood lifted a sacrifice fly into left field allowing a run to tag up and score. The Eagles battled back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. NDMU could not score in the top of the inning and Saint Elizabeth score in the bottom of the inning to pick up the 6-5 victory.
GAME 2
NDMU jumped out to an early lead in game two. A. Hafner led off the game reaching on a fielding and stole second to move herself into scoring position. Je. Leatherwood singled allowing Hafner to score.
The Gators held the Eagles offense in check throughout the first five innings behind a strong pitching performance by Malorie Gogel. Gogel pitched 6.0 innings, allowing three runs, none earned, on six hits while striking out two. Saint Elizabeth capitalized on a couple of NDMU errors in the sixth inning, plating three runs to take a 3-1 lead. NDMU put two runners on base in the seventh inning, but they could not pull off the comeback.
WHO'S NEXT
The Gators will return home to face Keystone College in their final United East doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 27. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
