Game Recap: Baseball |

Week in Review: Baseball goes 1-2

The Notre Dame of Maryland Gators recently faced a series of tough matchups, including two closely contested games against Saint Elizabeth and a thrilling victory over Central Pennsylvania.

Notre Dame (Md.) [5-11] defeated Central Pennsylvania [11-6] by a score of 12-11 on Friday at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover, Md. The Gators took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a solid offensive effort. After Ryan Parks walked and Brennan Deremeik singled to put runners on base, Mark Reineke doubled down the left field line, driving in Parks. Evan Britt followed up with a groundout to shortstop, bringing home Deremeik and giving the Gators a 2-1 lead.

The third inning saw the Gators extend their lead with a four-run rally. Kyle Erickson and Hunter Beil both drew walks, setting the stage for Zane Cook, who delivered a triple to right center, bringing home both runners. Deremeik further capitalized with a double to left center, driving in two more runs and increasing the lead to 6-2. In the fifth inning, the Gators capitalized on Central Pennsylvania errors and timely hitting to score five more runs. Parks singled and later scored on a fielder's choice, while subsequent walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Beil's sacrifice fly and Cook's RBI single contributed to the scoring, putting the Gators ahead 12-5.

Despite a late surge from Central Pennsylvania in the eighth inning, where they scored five runs, the Gators maintained their lead. The game concluded with a 12-11 victory for the Gators, highlighted by their efficient scoring in the early innings.

In the first game, Saint Elizabeth (10-11) defeated Notre Dame of MD (5-12) by a score of 9-7 on Saturday at Naimoli Ballpark in Madison, NJ. It was a scoreless first inning for both teams, but Saint Elizabeth took an early lead in the second inning. A combination of singles and a groundout allowed them to score a run and lead 1-0. Notre Dame of Maryland responded in the fifth inning when Beil doubled to left center, driving in Parks and narrowing the deficit to 5-1.

In the seventh inning, the Gators rallied with two runs. Evan Britt walked, and Mark Reineke followed with a walk of his own. Parks then delivered an RBI single, followed by a passed ball that allowed Reineke to score, reducing the gap to 5-3. The eighth inning saw the Gators mount another comeback, scoring four runs. Walks and a strategic hit by Kyle Erickson, combined with a crucial error by the left fielder, enabled the Gators to take the lead 7-5. However, Saint Elizabeth responded in the bottom of the eighth inning, reclaiming the lead with four runs of their own. They capitalized on singles and a key walk, which contributed to a 9-7 advantage. Despite a valiant effort in the ninth inning, the Gators were unable to score, concluding the game with a final score of 9-7 in favor of Saint Elizabeth.

In a subsequent matchup, Saint Elizabeth (11-11) again defeated Notre Dame of Maryland (5-13) by a score of 9-7 on Saturday at Naimoli Ballpark in Madison, N.J. The Gators kicked off the game with Beil and Tyler Holton both reaching base, while a wild pitch allowed Beil to score, putting the Gators on the board early. Saint Elizabeth responded in the bottom half, tying the score at 1-1 with an RBI single from Policastro.

Notre Dame displayed resilience in the fourth inning, capitalizing on walks and wild pitches to score three runs. This rally was initiated by Parks' bases-loaded walk, followed by two runs scoring on wild pitches, bringing the Gators within striking distance at 6-4. A significant surge came in the eighth inning for Notre Dame. After two fielding errors by Saint Elizabeth, Holton delivered a crucial two-RBI single, followed by an RBI double from Zane Cook, pulling the Gators closer with the score at 9-7. Despite the late-game efforts, including two more runners left on base in the ninth inning, the Gators fell short against Saint Elizabeth, concluding the game with a 9-7 result in favor of the Eagles.
