Mark Winkel

Mark Winkel started at Notre Dame of Maryland as the athletic communications director in July 2025. Winkel joins the Gator family with over 13 years of collegiate athletics administration experience.

Prior to joining NDMU, Winkel served as the director of athletics at Carroll Community College, where he was just the second athletic director in the program’s history. In his time at Carroll CC, he increased student-athlete participation by 40% percent in his first year.

Winkel had previously served as the manager of sports information and event operations for over six years at Howard Community College. In his time at Howard CC, Mark showed great success in the improvement and advancement of many of the game day operations as well as the promotional capabilities. His responsibilities included supervision of game day staff, managing all game day operations, promotion of home and away matches, and community engagement to promote the teams at Howard CC.

While at Howard CC, Mark also started the first collegiate esports team for a community college in the state of Maryland. During his time as the head coach, he led the teams to seven conference championships and one national championship in four years at the helm. He was named to the board of directors for the National Esports Collegiate Conference.

Prior to his second stint at Howard CC, he was the manager for sports information and game day operations at Harford Community College, where he was responsible for game day operations, event management, promotions, and community engagement.  He also spent two years working at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in the sports information office while also working as the director of baseball operations for the Retrievers. He was also at CCBC Essex for one year working in athletics administration.

Mark graduated from California State University Monterey Bay with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and sports management. He earned his master’s degree in sports management and athletic administration from Southern New Hampshire University.
