Baltimore, Md. -- Notre Dame of Maryland University defeated McDaniel College in a five-set thriller to stay undefeated during the 2013 campaign.
The Gators took the first two sets by the same 25-23 scores to take a 2-0 set advantage. The Green Terror rebounded to claim the next two sets, winning 25-19 and 25-15.
In the deciding set, McDaniel jumped out to an early lead, taking an early 8-5 lead at the changeover. After a time out, Notre Dame bounced back, going on a 7-1 rally to take a 12-9 lead before McDaniel took their first time out of the set. Coming out of the break, the Green Terror scored four quick points to the Gators one reduce the host's lead to 13-12.
Out of the time out, Notre Dame took a 14-1 lead, before a game-winning kill by junior
Marylu Ortiz (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino) clinched victory for the Gators after falling between McDaniel blockers.
Offensively, Ortiz and senior
Cortney Silvis (Boonsboro, Md./Hagerstown Community College) led the team 15 kills each. Junior
Paige Kitchen (Hagerstown, Md./Hagerstown Community College) added 46 assists and seven kills. Sophomore
Kamelya Medina (Albuquerque, N.M./New Mesa) contributed three aces to the effort.
Freshman
Cleaya Antes (Carson, Calif./Califormia Academy of Math and Science) led the Gators with 43 digs while Silvis and sophomore
Taylor Kent (Baltimore, Md./Wilde Lake) each chipped in with 10. Freshman
Taylor Combs (Columbia, Md./Atholton) recorded a career-high four blocks to assist the defense.
With the victory, Notre Dame improves to 5-0 on the season and will now travel to Penn State-Abington for a quad match to face Wesley College, Penn State-Harrisburg and Penn State-Abington Saturday.
