Basketball Drops Close Contest to Hollins

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Notre Dame basketball suffered a tough loss at home against Hollins University in their final home game of 2017.  The Gators struggled to get offensive momentum and despite only being down by two with two and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter fell, 52-43.

Notre Dame was led in scoring by senior Zaria Comer who recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Comer went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line for the second time this season, while also shooting 50% from the floor.  Junior Justine Mudiay also posted double-figures, finishing with 10 points and recorded the Gators' only three-pointer in the game.  She led the team in assists with four, for a season-high.  The team finished with 11 assists.  Freshman Keyeria Dawson added seven rebounds, a rebounds shy of her career-high, while posting a career-high two blocks in the game.

In the first quarter, Notre Dame jumped out to a 6-1 lead through the first half of the quarter.  Hollins began to chip away and got with one, 10-9 with just over a minute left in the quarter.  A late layup by Comer in the closing seconds of the first, gave Notre Dame a 12-9 lead going into the second quarter.

Hollins upped their intensity, taking the lead off two layups in the first minute and a half of the second quarter.  In the second frame, Notre Dame and Hollins competed for the lead seeing two tied scores and five lead changes.  After a layup by senior Shelby Cochran with three and a half minutes left in the half, Hollins held Notre Dame to just three points, outscoring them 8-3.  Gators went into the half, down four, 25-21.

After an even third quarter with both teams posting 12 points, Notre Dame went into the fourth quarter down four.  A jumper by Comer in the eighth minute of the fourth opened scoring for Notre Dame, getting them within two, 37-35.  For every basket that got the Gators close to even, Hollins answered with a basket of their own.  In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame got within two-points of Hollins three times, but could not break through.  Clutch free-throws by Comer with 2:29 left in the game saw Notre Dame back within two points, but Hollins closed out the game going on a 7-0 run.  The Gators fell in their final game of their three-game home stand, 52-43.

Today's loss by Notre Dame moves them to 3-4 overall before a short holiday break.  The Gators will return to action on December 29th in Nashville, Tennessee.  They will compete in the Music City Classic playing Shenandoah University on the 29th and Washington and Jefferson College on the 30th.  The Gators will come back home hosting three-consecutive home games starting on January 3rd against Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Cairn University.
