Volleyball Opens Season 2-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. – The Notre Dame volleyball team picked up their first wins of the season as they hosted Penn State Schuylkill and Misericordia University, Saturday.  In the opening match, the Gators defeated the Nittany Lions, 3-0 (25-7, 25-8, 25-6).  In the final match of the tri-match, Notre Dame routed the Cougars in four sets, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-14, 26-24).

In their victories, the Gators had two players record 20 or more kills and two with 10.  Freshman Sarah Sweet tallied 20 kills over Notre Dame's two matches and racked up 11 aces and 19 digs in her career debut.  Sophomore Kayleigh Davis had 21 kills, hitting for an average of .304 for the day.  She added 19 digs and three blocks.  Middle hitters, senior Bobbi McDowell and freshman Michaila Sheedy, combined for 20 kills (10 each) and showed dominance at the net, each recording five block assists.  Senior setter, Jamie Reyes posted 61 assists, with eight digs and five aces.

On the defensive end, Notre Dame racked up 81 digs over two matches.  Senior Grace Park tallied 18 digs, while adding six aces.  Sophomore Mary Marquez finished the day with 10 digs and three service aces.

Against Misericordia University, Notre Dame took an early match lead, taking the first set 25-18.  After Notre Dame took a 6-2 lead in the second set, the Cougars climbed back to see the score tied at 14 apiece.  Misericordia continued the pressure, taking a two-point lead.  The Gators stayed within three of the Cougars, but couldn't get pass them as they dropped the second set, 22-25.  In the third set, Notre Dame fought back.  The team used a 11-1 run to take a commanding lead eventually sealing the third set 25-14. 

Again to open the set, Notre Dame took a lead, holding the Cougars, 16-7.  A six-point run helped Misericordia chip away at the lead.  The Cougars took a one-point lead, 22-21.  The Gators would bounce back to see the score tied at 24 apiece.  Notre Dame used a service error by the Cougars and a kill to take the match, 26-24.

After the holiday weekend, Notre Dame returns to action, hosting two matches during the week and then traveling to Washington College for a trimatch, Saturday.  First, the Gators will see Trinity Washington University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
