Softball Soars Past Trinity in Doubleheader

DUNDALK, Md. – Notre Dame softball are back at .500 after sweeping Trinity Washington University in their non-conference doubleheader.  The Gators are now 6-6 overall this season, securing 18-0 and 24-0 victories over the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon.

GAME 1
The Gators after sophomore Jodie Bronushas struck out the side to open the game headed into the bottom of the first inning ready to hit.  Batting through the order, the Gators knocked in 10 first-inning runs to take a commanding lead.

NDMU did not let up, taking the game 18-0 in five innings to notch their fifth win of the season.

Bronushas pitched her second-consecutive no hitter and second of her career.  She bested her career-high strikeout mark set yesterday, striking out 13 batters and only walking one.

Freshman Maci Lopez led the team with three hits, scoring two runs and two RBI.  She went a perfect 7-for-7 from the plate over both games.  Junior Isa Carunungan, Bronushas, and freshman Amethyst Stevens led the team with three runs apiece.

Ten of the team's 13 batters in the game posted an RBI; senior Samantha Kastner, junior Carunungan and Maya Lazaro, and Bronushas led the team with two each.

GAME 2
Carunungan, pitching for the Gators, struck out the first two batters and forced a groundout to get the Gators up to the plate quickly in the first inning.  Again, the Gators jumped out to an early lead against the Tigers putting up 13 runs in the first inning.

NDMU tacked on another 11 runs against Trinity Washington to close out the game, while holding them scoreless over five innings.

Carunungan was one hit shy of a perfect game, while finishing the game with eight strikeouts.

Lopez, Carunungan, and Bronushas led the team, each going 4-for-4 from the plate.  Lopez recorded a little league homerun in the first inning, hitting a triple and then advancing home on an error by the outfield.

Two batters later, Kastner drove her first-career two-run homerun over the left field fence.  She finished the game with one hit, two runs-scored, and three RBI.  Lopez and Bronushas led the team with five RBI, career-high for both.

With 24 runs scored in the second game, the Gators tied a Notre Dame school record.  In 2012, NDMU scored a 24-17 victory over University of Valley Forge.  The Gators also have scored three-consecutive five-inning victories this season.
