Gators Field Hockey Shutout Cyclones for Fourth Straight Win

BALTIMORE - Notre Dame of Maryland University field hockey team played three scoreless periods before pulling away late in the fourth to defeat Centenary University (2-10, 1-3 CSAC)  2-0 on Wednesday evening. Jensen Armstrong kept the Cyclones offense at bay all afternoon and Vanessa Dunn lifted the Gators offense firing shots late in the fourth for the eventual game-winner. Notre Dame (Md.) moves to 3-3 in conference play and improves to 5-8 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Gators started the match with three penalty corner opportunities three minutes into the game. Notre Dame converted those penalty corners into chances that kept NDMU on the Cyclones side of the pitch for the majority of the period.
  • The second period was all Armstrong. The goalkeeper had two saves on four shots and kept the Cyclones off the scoreboard. Armstrong ended the contest with four saves and her second clean sheet of the season.
  • Both teams traded blows in the third looking to take control of the game. Armstrong was there once again for the Gators. She added two saves in the period.
  • Dunn delivered a rocket, finding the far left post to put the Gators up a score. Just minutes later, Dunn went for goal, and teammate Jaime Ballard was able to get her stick in the way to change the trajectory of the shot for NDMU's second goal.
OF NOTE
  • Notre Dame (Md.) won the penalty corner battle 7-1.
  • With the win, the Gators get their first-ever win against Centenary (NJ).
  • Dunn leads the Gators with 10 goals and 26 points this season. Ballard has four goals for third-most.
