ROSEMONT, Pa. – Notre Dame of Maryland University President Dr. Marylou Yam, Chair of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Board of Directors, has announced that Travis Spencer will serve as Acting Commissioner of the CSAC, effective Thursday, April 15.
Spencer currently serves as the Director of Athletics at Centenary University, one of the CSAC's 11 core institutions.
Spencer came to Centenary after spending 13 years at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He had most recently served as the Director of Business Development, a position he assumed in March of 2010. In that role, he worked with the sales and marketing teams to plan, budget and execute marketing plans while playing a significant role in the event management team that scheduled over a 100 events per year. He assisted with the redesign of the website and helped senior leadership with the day-to-day workings of the department.
In addition, Spencer served as a key member of the Athletics Business Services team as manager of corporate sales at Lehigh from 2005 to January of 2016 and assisting other revenue generating operations within the department such as ticketing sales, facility rentals, and camps. In this position, he handled all aspects of the athletic department's corporate affiliate program. Spencer redesigned marketing and communication pieces while establishing strong relationships with media outlets in the area.
Spencer was Lehigh's Assistant Director for Athletics Partnership from 2005 until February of 2010. He managed the athletics' fundraising program and coordinated alumni events for the various teams. Spencer designed and produced solicitation materials while implementing a fundraising campaign that now consistently generates over two million dollars annually for Lehigh Athletics.
Spencer got his career started as the assistant wrestling coach at the University of Scranton in 1998. He taught technical skills to the team, recruited student-athletes and worked on the travel schedule. Spencer also managed the budget and assisted with the planning and running of two conference championships and the 2002 Division III National Wrestling Tournament.
While Spencer was working with the wrestling team at Scranton, he was an account executive for the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Red Barons.
His main responsibilities included selling season and group tickets and credits this beginning in helping him understand the value of people within a community.
Spencer earned his Bachelor of Science in business management from the University of Scranton in 1998, where he was a member of the wrestling team. He earned a Master of Science in physical education with a concentration in sport management from Old Dominion University in 2005. Spencer is earned his Master of Educational Leadership from Lehigh University in December of 2019, his second Master's.
Spencer is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and a member of ACCED-I. He is also a certified PIAA wrestling official and has served on various boards at Lehigh University and in the Lehigh Valley community.
