Dunn, Lockard Star as Field Hockey Improves to 1-1

BALTIMORE – Notre Dame of Maryland University's field hockey team (1-1) captured its first win of the season against powered by two third-quarter scores in front of a spirited Gators home crowd. Senior Vanessa Dunn led the way against Drew University (0-4 ) with four points including the go-ahead assist that led to junior Jaime Ballard's winning goal. Ballard, Dunn, and senior Hailey Lockard each had a score in Notre Dame's 3-2 win.  

"It was really great to get a win today, " said Head Coach Jon Esposito. "Our student athletes have been working so hard and deserve the success they earned. Their hard work bodes well for the future."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Notre Dame (Md.) offense had the spark from the jump. Dunn had a great look at the goal after a penalty corner set from freshman Alyson Geckle but Drew got the stop.

  • The Gators allowed a late score with just over one minute remaining in the second half giving the Rangers the 1-0 lead.

  • NDMU wasted no time, Lockard was once again on the attack with her aggressive play. After a give-and-go pass from Dunn, she delivered Notre Dame's first score.  

  • Down 2-1 to start the third, Dunn was seen weaving her way past the Rangers defense, beating the goalie for an easy score.   

  • With the game tied 2-2, Ballard and the Gators executed on a beautiful penalty corner opportunity spearheaded by timely feeds from Lockard and Dunn to give Notre Dame (Md.) the 3-2 lead. 

  • Led by senior Maia Giafes and sophomore goalie Jensen Armstrong, Notre Dame (Md.) defense kept the Rangers off the board in the fourth to secure a huge come from behind win.

 

OF NOTE

  • Armstrong has 18 saves on the season.

  • The battle for shots and shots on target was tight with both teams connecting on five out of nine attempts. 

  • Dunn and Lockard accounted for seven of the Gators' nine shot attempts. 

  • Drew saw 10 penalty corner opportunities to Notre Dame's seven.
