WASHINGTON D.C.- The Notre Dame (MD) women's basketball team cruised to an 84-43 road victory over Trinity (DC) on Saturday, November 19. The Gators dominated the second quarter, holding a 27-3 edge in scoring, helping NDMU hold a 27-point lead at the half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gators (2-2 overall) settled into the game early in the first quarter, going on a 6-2 run powered by baskets from
Alexis Durham and
Daija Fitchett, taking a one-point lead. The Tigers (0-4 overall) responded, scoring six straight points to retake a five-point advantage.
Michel Rivera settled NDMU's offense, connecting on a 3-pointer from the wing. A few moments later, Rivera drilled another 3-pointer, tying the game at 14. The Gators score the final four points of the quarter, holding an 18-15 advantage.
NDMU dominated the second quarter from start-to-finish, outscoring Trinity 27-3 in the quarter.
Kori People found her rhythm in early on, knocking down a jump shot that seemed to spark the whole team. After Fitchett connected on a turn-around jumper in the paint, People converted two consecutive steals-and-scores, putting NDMU ahead 27-15. She continued to push the Gators advantage hitting back-to-back 3-pointers.
Ayana Brim got into the act, converting a three-point play to give the Gators a 21-point lead. People added two more 3-pointers before the end of the half, putting NDMU ahead 45-18 at the break.
Alexis Jones got the Gators offense started in the second half, converting a pair of layups in the paint.
Jasimine Gardner put back an offensive rebound, giving NDMU a 31-point lead. In control of the game, the Gators began to use their depth, getting some younger players some valuable playing experience. NDMU worked to get their post players involved in the game, focusing on getting quality looks in the paint. The Gators led by as many as 44 points in the fourth quarter, eventually earning an 84-43 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- People had another outstanding performance, scoring 24 points, pulling in eight rebounds and dishing four assists
- Durham looked strong in the backcourt, recording 13 points and five assists
- Fitchett found her groove offensively, scoring 11 points and pulling in nine rebounds
- Brim scored seven points, going 3-3 at the free throw line
- Rivera and Jones each recorded six points
- The Gators won the battle on the glass, recording a 47-33 edge in rebounds
- Trinity was led by Taryn Yancey, who scored 14 points
