BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame of Maryland Women's Basketball Team fell in a high scoring season opener to Washington College (Md.) by a score of 96-74 on Tuesday, November 8 in the MBK Sports Complex. The Gators got an outstanding effort from
Kori People who netted an impressive 29 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gators (0-1 Overall) raced out to an early lead with People scoring the teams first eight points, helping NDMU take an 8-2 lead. The Shorewomen (1-0 Overall) responded with an 8-2 run of their own to tie the game at 10. Later in the quarter, People connected on a corner 3-pointer to put the Gators ahead 24-22.
Jasimine Gardner secured NDMU's lead, pulling in an offensive rebound and putting it back in the basket to give the Gators a one-point edge heading to the second quarter.
Washington College grabbed momentum in the second quarter, scoring the first 11 points. The Gators began to rally back with two free throws by
Amya Durham and a jump shot from
Alexis Durham cutting the deficit down to five. With just over 2:00 minutes remaining in the half,
Alexis Durham drilled a 3-pointer to cut the Shorewomen's advantage down to three. People and Durham scored the final four points of the half, but the Gators trailed 47-45 at the break.
Bethani Newbold connected on a pair of free throws just over two minutes into the second half, capping off a 5-2 run that gave NDMU a 50-49 lead. The Gators remained within striking distance, trailing 59-58 when Gardner finished a layup. The Shorewomen snatched momentum back from the Gators going on a 14-3 run to close the quarter. NDMU could not stage another rally, eventually falling by a score of 96-74.
