Leatherwood Throws a Complete-Game Shutout; NDMU Sweeps Gallaudet in Opening Weekend

BALTIMORE, MD – The Notre Dame of Maryland softball team (3-1, 0-0 CSAC) started the 2022 season at home with a 12 strikeout, complete-game shutout from Jessie Leatherwood in Saturday's 5-0 win against John Jay (1-1, 0-0 CUNYAC). Notre Dame split the opening double-header against the Bloodhounds. The Gators swept Gallaudet (0-8, 0-0 ECFC) 2-0, tailing 26 runs on the road to conclude the opening weekend.  

John Jay (1-1)
  • Leatherwood was dealing from the mound, posting the fifth-best strikeout (12) performance in program history. She provided some run support from the plate scoring two runs in the win. Leatherwood was 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, and two walks in the series. 
  • Maci Lopez was perfect at the dish against the Bloodhounds. She batted 5-for-5 with two runs and two walks. 
  • Miranda Burton was 3-for-7 with an RBI in game one. She also had 19 putouts and caught one base runner at the catcher spot. 
  • Kendall Snyder, Bethani Newbold and Ciarra Bockstie each drew in a run. Bockstie pitched six innings in her first collegiate start.

Gallaudet (2-0)
  • Leatherwood made the start in game one and improved to 2-0 on the year, allowing two earned runs and limiting the Bison to four hits. She was 2-for-4 in the batter's box with four runs and four walks. 
  • Snyder led the Gators with six runs batted in, hitting 2-for-3 with three runs and four walks. She won her first career start in game two on five innings, allowing three earned runs.  
  • Newbold blasted a grand slam with her first career home run in the first inning of game two. The freshman had five RBI's and two runs. 
  • Leading off the heart of the order, Burton was 4-for-7 with three runs and three RBI's. Lopez batted .500 with a triple on four hits, four RBI's and three runs. 
  • Candace Forgach-Aguilar led the team with five runs and two stolen bases, batting 3-for-7 in two games. Bockstie was 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBI's, three walks and two runs.

Notre Dame (Md.) will start conference play on the road this Saturday against Clarks Summit.
