Softball Looks to Make Late Push into CSAC Playoffs After Series Split Against Cairn

BALTIMORE, MD – The Notre Dame of Maryland softball team (7-11, 4-6 CSAC) split Thursday's doubleheader against Cairn (6-18, 3-7 CSAC) after capping off a 3-2 win in game two to overtake the sixth spot in the CSAC standings with just a week left until the postseason. 

 Game One (Cairn, 2-1)
  • Jessie Leatherwood pitched seven innings allowing only two earned. The junior struck out 11 Highlanders, allowing only five hits.
  • Leatherwood has allowed just three earned in her last 21 innings pitched. She's sporting a 2.74 ERA on the year. 
  • Notre Dame had four batters with two hits but the Gators failed to capitalize with seven runners left on base. 
  • Miranda Burton, Kendall Snyder, Bethani Newbold, and Leatherwood all went for two hits. 
  • Maci Lopez extended her hit-streak to 14 games in game one and was responsible for the Gators' lone run in the bottom of the seventh. Burton was credited with the RBI. 

Game Two (NDMU, 3-2)
  • NDMU started game two facing a two-score deficit before after a quick start from Cairn to start the first inning.
  • Lopez led off with a single to push the streak to 15 games and Leatherwood's single got two runners on in the first. 
  • Burton grounded out but was able to advance runners to second and third just in time for Snyder. 
  • RBI leaders Snyder and Newbold delivered, driving in runs once more when the Gators needed a shift in momentum after the game one loss.
  • Ciarra Bockstie had her best performance yet on the mound. After allowing two runs off two hits and a walk, she went the remainder of the game allowing zero runs while giving up one hit and a walk in the win. 
  • Leatherwood came in to close the bottom of the seventh. She punched out three in the inning to seal the victory for Notre Dame.
