Gators Impress In Road Victory

PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team used a smothering defensive effort to defeat the University of Valley Forge 71-22 on Saturday, Jan. 7. The Gators are now 6-0 in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play. 
 
Daija Fitchett recorded her second double-double of the week, finishing with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Fitchett moved up NDMU's all-time scoring and rebounding lists in the process. Kori People added 15 points, coming up one rebound short of a double-double. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gators (10-3 overall, 6-0 CSAC) took an early lead when People hit a 3-pointer from the wing. Amya Durham slashed to the basket for a layup to put NDMU ahead 7-3. The Patriots (2-7 overall, 0-4 CSAC) tried to keep pace, pulling within three before Alexis Durham converted a three-point play. NDMU stretched the lead to eight going into the second quarter. 
 
People and Jasimine Gardner converted layups to open the second quarter, quickly extending the advantage to double digits. The Gators went on a 14-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Amya Durham that gave NDMU a 20-point lead. Elena Rodriguez knocked down a corner jump shot just before the end of the half, giving the Gators a 40-17 edge at the break. 
 
NDMU's defense locked down Valley Forge in the second half, shutting the Patriots out in the third quarter and holding them to only five points in the second half. Fitchett heated up in early in the quarter where she scored 12 points. Chantel Curry hit a jump shot to put the Gators ahead by 43 points going to the fourth quarter. NDMU continued to pull away in the final frame, leading by as many as 52 points on their way to the victory. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Gators shot 41.5 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line
  • People pulled in nine rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds
  • Making her first start of the season, Amya Durham scored nine points
  • NDMU dominated the glass, holding a 46-23 advantage in rebounds
  • Alexis Durham dished a game-high five assists
  • The Gators' Defense shut the Patriots out in the third quarter
  • Every member of the NDMU's team that dressed for the game scored at least two points 
 
HISTORICAL NOTES
Fitchett continues to leave her mark on the program, moving into second place in career rebounds (957). She passes Catherine Vecchioni who totaled 941 rebounds for the Gators from 2003-2007. In addition, Fitchett moved into 10th in program history in points (974) passing Tinah Houck who played for NDMU from 1993-97. 


 
WHO'S NEXT
The Gators will return home for a pivotal CSAC showdown with defending conference champions Clarks Summit University on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
