Weekend Recap: Soccer Falls To Bryn Athyn, Volleyball Drops Road Matchup with Falcons

BALTIMORE, MD- The Notre Dame of Maryland athletic department had three teams in action on Saturday, Sept. 30 with both the men's and women's soccer teams hosting Bryn Athyn College while the women's volleyball team travel to take on Cedar Crest College.  

WOMEN'S SOCCER 

BRYN ATHYN 7, NDMU 1 

The women's soccer team looked to get on the board early in their matchup against Bryn Athyn, firing three shots with Tchala Ungwa and Emma Alascia each putting a shot on frame. The Lions (5-2 Overall, 2-0 United East) scored in the 33rd minute to take a 1-0 first half lead.  

Bryn Athyn grabbed control of the game in the second half, scoring three times in a 13-minute span to build a 4-0 lead. The Gators (3-4 Overall, 1-1 United East) battled back with Tchala Ungwa scoring her second career goal in the 64th minute to make the score 4-1. The Lions tacked on three more goals to pull away and pick the victory. 

The women's soccer team will be back in action when they travel to face Wilson College on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM  

MEN'S SOCCER 

BRYN ATHYN 1, NDMU 0 

The men's soccer team controlled play throughout their matchup with Bryn Athyn College, firing eight first half shots. Hector Alavarez rocketed a pair of shots in the 10th minute, but the Lions goalkeeper was able to make a pair of great saves. Tassilo Lehmkuhl fired a shot off a free kick in the 28th minute, but it was once again saved. The Lions (3-3-1 Overall, 2-0 Untied East) broke through, scoring in the 39th minute.  

NDMU (2-5-1 Overall, 0-2 United East) continued pushing trying to find an equalizer in the second half. The Gators launched nine shots but could not find the back of the net, eventually falling 1-0. 

The men's soccer team will be back in action when they host Wilson College on Tuesday, Oct. 3. The kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM 

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL 

CEDAR CREST 3, NDMU 1 

The women's volleyball headed to Allentown to take on Cedar Crest College in a rematch of last year's conference championship game. The Gators (4-8 Overall, 0-1 United East) struggled to find their offensive rhythm, dropping the opening two sets of the match. NDMU bounced back, using a 6-1 run midway through the third set to make the match 2-1. The Falcons (6-8 Overall, 1-0 United East) put the match away, taking the fourth set by a score of 21-25.  

The Gators offense was led by Jade Stewart who recorded seven kills, hitting .250 for the match. Emma Mueller and Natalie Newton each posted a double-double, with Mueller finishing with 21 assists and 10 digs and Newton recording 13 assists and 10 digs. Paulina Hernandez once again anchored the defense, finishing with 19 digs.  

The women's volleyball team will return home to face Penn St. Mont Alto on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
