Gators Fall At The Buzzer

Owings Mills, MD- The Notre Dame of Maryland men's basketball team fell in the final seconds of their matchup against York College (NY) by a score of 72-71 in the Stevenson Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday Nov. 18.  

The teams traded buckets throughout the first half, with Jackson Pugh putting the Gators ahead early by connecting on a 3-pointer off a steal by Jayden Holland. After the Cardinals recaptured the lead by scoring six straight points, K'Won Johnson hit a jumper and Daraun Gray knocked down his first 3-pointer of the game to put NDMU back in front. The Gators began to pull away, building a seven-point lead after a layup by Garvin Sween and another 3-pointer from Gray. Later in the quarter, Jahbreco Dacosta pulled in an offensive rebound and powered back the put back to extend the lead to 10. Cole Matthews splashed a 3-pointer in transition to give NDMU a 31-20 advantage with five minutes remaining in the half. York College (NY) answered going on an 18-2 run over the next four minutes, taking a four-point lead with just over minute remaining in the half. NDMU recaptured the momentum, scoring the final five points of the half to lead, with Pugh knocking down a shot just before the buzzer to give NDMU a 39-38 advantage.  

Pugh and Matthews kept NDMU's momentum going early in the second half, knocking down jump shots to keep the Gators ahead. Jalen Yates scored four-straight points, converting a layup off a steal in transition to stretch the lead back to seven. Gray made it a 10-point advantage drilling his fourth 3-pointer of the game. The Cardinals once again responded by going on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 56 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. The Gators tried to pull away with Yates stroking a 3-pointer with just 3:35 remaining to go ahead by five points. York clawed back, holding a 71-70 lead with just over 20 seconds remaining in the game. Johnson put the Gators in front hitting a jumper. The Cardinals responded by scoring with five seconds remaining to recapture the lead. NDMU got one final look at the buzzer, but could not score, falling 72-71.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Johnson recorded his first career double-double, finishing the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds. 

  • Dacosta also earned his first career double-double, scoring 13 points and gathering in 15 rebounds. 

  • Gray continued to be a major spark off the bench, scoring 12 points by hitting 4 3-pointers. 

  • Pugh bounced back, scoring 11 points, and dishing a team-high five assists.  

  • The Gators won the battle on the glass, holding a 47-36 edge in rebounds. 

  • York College was led in scoring by Olawale Kila who scored 22 points.  

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will pause during the Thanksgiving Holiday Week, returning to action when they travel to face NCAA Division I opponent Radford on Sunday, Nov. 26. The tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM
