BALTIMORE – The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team dropped a highly competitive battle with Gallaudet University, falling by a score of 58-55 on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The Gators jumped out to the early lead, with Hillary Howard and Chantel Curry converting layups to give NDMU a 9-6 lead. Amani Watts powered in a layup in the post, putting the Gators ahead 15-8. Gallaudet scored four of the final five points, but NDMU led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. Amya Durham and Howard converted layups to put the Gators ahead by eight. NDMU's offense would then stall, failing to score another point in the second quarter. The Bison closed the half on an 11-0 run, holding a 25-22 lead at the half.
NDMU quickly tied the game in the third quarter, with Watts and Curry converting layups. Bethani Newbold knocked down a 3-pointer, putting NDMU ahead by four. Howard got an immediate steal, finding an open Durham for a layup that gave NDMU a 36-30 lead. Later in the quarter, Newbold hit another 3-pointer, keeping the Gators ahead by seven. Gallaudet battled back, finishing the quarter on an 8-0 run to retake a one-point lead. The Bison stretched their lead to five early in the fourth quarter. Ny'Asia Futrell knocked down a corner 3-pointer, cutting the deficit down to two. Newbold then converted a layup to tie the game at 48. The teams traded the lead, with another Futrell 3-pointer putting NDMU ahead by two points. Gallaudet once again surged, finishing the game on a 5-0 run to earn the victory.

Watts continues to put up huge numbers, scoring 17 points while hauling in 13 rebounds.

The Gators will pause during the Thanksgiving Holiday Week, returning to action when they host Cedar Crest College in their United East opener on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
