Women's Basketball Surges Past Wilson

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team used a dominant first half to blow past Wilson College by a score of 79-59 on Tuesday, Dec. 5.  

The Gators got off to an excellent start, with Hillary Howard scoring the first basket of the game, drawing a foul in the process, and completing a three-point play. After another layup by Howard, Ny'Asia Futrell slashed the basket for layup giving NDMU a 7-0 lead. Off a steal by Amani Watts, Amya Durham raced to the other end of the court for a transition layup, drawing a foul and completing another three-point play. The Phoenix tried to slow NDMU's momentum, scoring four-straight points before Durham knocked down her first 3-pointer of the game. The Gators closed the first quarter on an 11-0 run, holding a 25-8 lead heading into the second quarter. 

Jayda Mayles made her first appearance of the season, scoring the first points of the second quarter. The Gators would rattle off nine-straight points capped off by a three-point play by Watts that gave them a 26-point advantage. Late in the quarter, Wilson cut down the deficit, scoring eight-straight points to close back with 18 points. Alexis Jones closed out the half, putting back an offensive rebound to send the Gators into the break with a 20-point lead.  

The Gators capitalized on their lead using some of their depth early in the second half. Wilson managed to close within 15 points, before Jones completed a three-point play. Durham then drilled a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 21 points. In the final minute of the quarter, Watts converted another layup and Howard drilled a turnaround jumper from the foul line to give NDMU a 62-41 lead heading into the final frame. The Gators maintained control of the game throughout the fourth quarter, securing the 20-point victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Howard led the Gators in scoring, finishing with 20 points while pulling in eight rebounds. 

  • Watts earned her seventh double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and gathering 12 rebounds.  

  • Durham hit twice from beyond the arc, finishing the game with nine points. 

  • Jones racked up eight points, going 3-3 from the field. 

  • NDMU showed off their depth, with every member of the roster logging time on the floor 

  • The Gators won the battle on the glass, holding a 45-19 edge in rebounds.  

  • Wilson College was led by Allie Cullison who scored 18 points

The Gators will host Volt Division foe St. Mary's College of Maryland on Thursday, Dec. 7. The tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
