Morristown, NJ. - The Notre Dame of Maryland men's basketball team could not hold on to a second half lead, falling to defending conference champion Wilson College by a score of 77-71 on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
Despite some early fouls, the Gators grabbed an early lead, with a 3-pointer from Daraun Gray putting them ahead 3-1. Jackson Pugh found an open Jermaine Koger Jr. to put the team ahead by four. After another 3-pointer by Gray, Cole Matthews found an open Clarence Obiajulu on an inbounds pass to make the score 10-1. Wilson College regrouped and used a 10-3 to pull back within a single possession with 11:42 remaining in the first half. The teams traded baskets, with a 3-pointer by Azaan Sheikh giving NDMU a four-point lead. Pugh then found a wide-open Marquis James for an easy layup, pushing the advantage to six. Gray maintained the six-point advantage hitting another 3-pointer. Wilson answered right back, closing within one point with under three minutes remaining in the half. Mike Duffy and Pugh made key layups down the stretch to send the Gators into the break with a five-point lead.
The Gators got off to a fast start in the second half with Matthews swiping a steal and converting a layup in transition to give NDMU a seven-point lead. Pugh then drew a foul on a layup, executing a three-point play. After a 3-pointer from the Phoenix, Gray knocked down his first 3-pointer of the second half, giving the Gators a 45-35 lead. Wilson answered with eight-straight points, before the hot shooting Gray hit again from beyond the arc. Koger Jr. and James matched baskets by the visitors but a 6-0 run finally but Wilson ahead for the first time since the opening minute of the game. Koger Jr. tied the game back at 54 with 8:44 remaining in the game. The Phoenix built a five-point lead over the next few minutes, but the Gators would not go away with Gray continuing to light up the scoreboard by hitting another 3-pointer. A layup off an offensive rebound by Obiajulu kept NDMU within 1:53 remaining in the game, but they could not get a defensive stop down the stretch, eventually falling 77-71.
