Gators Race Past Valley Forge

Phoenixville, Pa.– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team raced past the University of Valley Forge, rolling to a 91-29 victory on Saturday, Dec. 9.  

The Gators started fast, with Bethani Newbold finding Amya Durham off the tip-off for an easy layup. NDMU began to attack the interior of UVF's defense, with Amani Watts powering in a pair of layups. Chantel Curry made an early splash, getting a steal and score and hitting a 3-pointer from the wing. Watts struck again, finishing a layup, drawing a foul and completing the three-point play to put the Gators ahead 14-2. After four-straight points by the Patriots, Durham knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing. NDMU closed the opening quarter on an 8-2 run, powered by two more 3-pointers from Durham.  

NDMU continued to extend its lead in the second quarter, opening the quarter on a 9-0 run highlighted by a 3-pointer from Yasmeen Yussuf. UVF tried to battle back, scoring six-straight points to close with 17 points. The Gators got back on track, converting back-to-back steals and scores with Watts and Newbold converting layups in transition. NDMU scored the final 10 points of the half, leading 44-17 at the break.  

Durham opened the scoring in the second half, drilling her fourth 3-pointer of the game. Watts pushed the lead back to 32, pulling in a rebound and putting it back. Jayda Mayles knocked down her first career 3-pointer, and then converted a layup to increase the advantage to 37 points. The Gators would close out the quarter on a 15-1 run, holding a 64-20 lead heading into the final frame. NDMU continued to pull away in the fourth quarter, with Elena Rodriguez scoring six points in the quarter. The Gators rolled to a 91-29 victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Watts scored a game-high 25 points, going 11-11 from the field. In addition, Watts pulled in 11 rebounds. 

  • Durham recorded 16 points, hitting four times from beyond the arc. She also swiped five steals. 

  • Howard came up just short of a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds.  

  • Curry and Mayles each posted nine points.  

  • The Gators held a 43-23 edge in rebounds, including pulling in 22 offensive rebounds that resulted in 28 second chance points.  

  • NDMU also forced 24 turnovers, directly leading to 29 points. 

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will pause for finals week and the holiday break before hosting Hood College on Saturday, Dec. 30. The tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
