Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Day With Win

BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame (MD) women's basketball team celebrated senior day with a 71-61 win over Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Before the game, NDMU took a few moments to honor seniors Ayana Brim and Daija Fitchett for their amazing contributions to the program. 
 
Alexis Durham turned in another outstanding performance, finishing the game with 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Fitchett earned another double-double finishing with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gators (20-4 overall, 16-1 CSAC) raced out the of the gates, with Durham drilling a 3-pointer on the team's second possession. NDMU would open on a 10-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Kori People. The Gators continued to shoot at high percentage early in the game, with Bethani Newbold, Fitchett and Durham all knocking down jump shots to stretch the lead to 12 points. The Lions (12-10 overall, 10-6 CSAC) slowed NDMU's momentum, scoring the final five points of the quarter to trail 24-17. 
 
Durham once again started the offense in the second quarter, hitting another wing 3-pointer. The Gators rebuild their lead to as large as 12 points with 5:27 remaining in the half. Bryn Athyn captured the momentum, going on a 14-1 run to close the half and held a one-point lead the break.  
 
NDMU regrouped at the break, and on their first possession of the second half Brim banked in a layup allowing the Gators to recapture the lead. NDMU drew eight fouls in the third quarter, capitalize on several trips to free throw line to maintain their advantage. In the closing minute of the quarter, People poked away a loose ball and sprinted to the end of the floor for a layup to give the Gators a six-point lead. Fitchett added one more jump shot in the quarter, putting NDMU ahead 57-49 going into the final frame. 
 
Alexis Jones extended the Gators advantage, powering in a pair of layups to give the Gators a 12-point lead. After Bryn Athyn had cut the lead down to single digits, People pulled in an offensive rebound and finished the put back. Brim sealed the victory with one more free throw, giving NDMU a 71-61 victory. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Gators shoot 46.3 percent from the field
  • Durham continues to fill the stat sheet, posting another impressive stat line with 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists
  • Fitchett posted her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 14 rebounds
  • Brim asserted her will in the post, scoring eight points while hauling in five rebounds
  • NDMU held a decisive edge on the glass, finishing with 44-25 edge in rebounds
  • People added 11 points and dished four assists
  • The Gators made the most of 16 Lions turnovers, converting them into 25 points
  • Jones reached double figures, scoring 11 points in 20 minutes of action
  • The Lions were led by Kaylia Duncan who scored 14 points
 
WHO'S NEXT
The Gators will conclude their regular season, when they travel to take on Cedar Crest College on Saturday, Feb. 18. Earlier this season, the Gators defeated the Falcons by a score of 87-42. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
