Softball Falls to Washington College

Chestertown, MD- The Notre Dame (MD) softball team opened their 2023 season by dropping a doubleheader to Washington College on Saturday, Mar. 4. The Gators dropped game one 8-0 in five innings before falling 9-6 in the nightcap. 
 
GAME 1
The Gators (0-1 Overall) offense struggled in their 8-0 five inning defeat to Washington College. NDMU did not record a hit until the third inning. Emma Livingston and Miranda Burton each recorded a single. Gena Donalds worked a walk, but the Gators could not capitalize. 
 
The Shorewomen (1-2 Overall) took advantage of a fielding error to grab and early 1-0 lead. NDMU starting pitcher Jessie Leatherwood went 4.0 innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned in 4.0 innings of action. In addition, Leatherwood picked up five strikeouts. Washington College plated five runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning to hold a command 8-0 lead.
 
NDMU had one final chance to get on the board in the fifth inning, with Donalds and Leatherwood each reaching base, but the Gators could not break through. 
 
GAME 2
NDMU's bats came alive in game two of the doubleheader, with the team plating their first runs of the season in a 9-6 defeat.
 
Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the third inning, the Gators (0-2 Overall) found their rhythm. Livingston led off the inning with a single and Donalds worked a walk to put two runners on base. After Burton got hit by a pitch, Ciarra Bockstie hit a hard shot toward second that brought Livingston home. Lilyian Hafner rocketed a double into left center field, clearing the bases to give NDMU a 4-1 lead.
 
Washington College (2-2 Overall) answered back, scoring eight total runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 9-4 lead. The Gators tried to rally in the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Bockstie hammered a single through the left side, allowing both runs to score. NDMU could not pull any closer, falling 9-6.
 
NOTABLES
  • Bockstie found her rhythm in game two, going 2-4 with three RBI
  • Hafner picked up NDMU's lone extra base hit, driving in three RBI with a double in game two
  • On the day, Leatherwood pitched 6.0 innings, recording eight total strikeouts
  • Livingston recorded a single in each game
  • Burton reached base twice during the doubleheader, scoring twice in game two
 
WHO'S NEXT 
The Gators will return to the field on Sunday, Mar. 5 when they travel to face Gallaudet University in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
