Softball Drops Two At Gallaudet

Washington D.C.- The Notre Dame (MD) softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader with Gallaudet University on Sunday, Mar. 5. The Gators dropped the first game 11-8 before falling 2-1 in the nightcap.

GAME 1
The Gators offense started fast, taking an early lead in the first inning. Gena Donalds led-off the game with a double into left field. Lilyian Hafner then singled and advanced to second to put two runners in scoring position. Jessie Leatherwood hammered a double into center field, allowing both runners to score.

The Bison answered back, plating five runs in the bottom of the third inning to retake the lead. NDMU answered back in the top of the fourth inning. Leatherwood reached on an error, advancing to third. Ciarra Bockstie knocked a single through the right side, scoring Leatherwood. Later in the inning, Emily Bonnett laced a triple into right field, scoring Bockstie. Scarlet Miller then drove in Bonnett to tie the game at five.

After Gallaudet retook a one run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, NDMU scored again in the fifth inning. Miranda Burton led-off the inning with a single up the middle. After Burton swiped second base, Hafner singled to third base allowing Burton to score. Leatherwood would then bring Hafner around to score, launching a double into left field. Leatherwood later scored on a wild pitch to give NDMU an 8-6 lead. The Bison struck back scoring five runs in the fifth inning, taking control of the game, picking up an 11-8 victory.

GAME 2
After the high scoring battle in game one, game two was much more focused on defense and pitching. Bockstie pitched 5.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two Bison.

The Gators grabbed an early lead in the top of the second inning, starting when Leatherwood blasted a triple into left center field. Bockstie hit a sharp hard ground ball toward the short stop, allowing Leatherwood to score.

Gallaudet battled back, scoring a run in the third inning and in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. NDMU could not get rally started in the seventh inning, dropping game two of the doubleheader.
