Gators Late Rally Falls Short

BALTIMORE - The Notre Dame of Maryland men's basketball team fell in the final minutes of their matchup with the University of Valley Forge, dropping the game by a score of 73-65 on Tuesday, Jan. 23.  

The Gators traded baskets with the Patriots throughout the opening minutes, with Valley Forge taking an early 10-7 lead. NDMU found their rhythm with a layup by Jahbreco Dacosta and a 3-pointer from Cole Matthews putting the Gators in front. Jalen Yates stretched the lead to five, knocking down a corner 3-pointer just before the shot clock expired. The Gators continued to connect from beyond the arc, with Matthews swishing a 3-pointer in transition to make the score 20-12. Valley Forge responded, going on an 8-2 run to close back within two points. Yates halted the run, hitting another corner 3-pointer. K'Won Johnson then finished a layup in the paint to push the lead back to seven. The Gators built their to as many as nine points with four minutes remaining in the half. The Patriots ended the half on a 15-5 run, holding a 38-37 lead at the break. 

Valley Forge pulled away early in the second using a 9-2 run to hold an eight-point lead. Dezmyn Nicholson started a rally hitting a deep 3-pointer. After a jumper by Nicholson, Johnson brought the Gators within one hitting a jump shot. The Patriots held on to the lead and pulled away, taking an eight-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the game. NDMU made one more push with Daraun Gray hitting a 3-pointer to close back within five. Johnson then knocked down a pull up jumper to close within three. Moments later, Johnson made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 62 points. Valley Forge seized momentum, finishing the game on an 11-3 run.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Johnson led the Gators in scoring, finishing the game with 21 points along with 10 rebounds.  

  • Matthews and Nicholson each scored eight points.  

  • Pugh scored eight points and dished out a team-high eight assists.  

  • Valley Forge was led in scoring by Jeremiah Daye who scored 24 points.

The Gators will continue their homestand, hosting Saint Elizabeth University on Saturday, Jan. 27. The tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
