Women's Basketball Blasts Past Patriots

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball continued rolling through conference play, defeating the University of Valley Forge by a score of 79-23 on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

The Gators got on the board first, with Amya Durham swishing a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Alexis Jones put NDMU ahead, powering in a layup to give NDMU a 5-0 lead. Valley Forge cut the lead down to one before Durham slashed to the basket for a layup. NDMU then turned up the defensive pressure, forcing several turnovers that led directly to layups by Sariyah Waller and Chantel Curry. Durham added one more layup before the end of the quarter, giving NDMU a 14-6 lead heading into the second quarter.

Thalia Kayiranga opened the second quarter by finishing a layup in the paint. Hillary Howard began to find her groove, knocking down a jump shot from the foul line to put the Gators ahead by 12 points. NDMU continued to pull away, using pressure to create easy baskets, with Yasmeen Yussuf scoring twice off UVF turnovers. Regina Savirova nailed a 3-pointer giving NDMU an 18-point lead. Durham punctuated a dominant first half with another 3-pointer.

NDMU wasted little time pulling away in the second half, using defense to create quality offensive chances. The Gators held the Patriots to only nine total points in the second half. Curry scored twice in the opening minute of the third quarter, sparking a 15-2 run. Kayiranga banked in a layup in the final minute of the third quarter to give NDMU a 55-19 lead. The Gators remained in complete control throughout the fourth quarter, rolling to a 79-23 victory.
