Men's Basketball Drops Battle With Defenders

BALTIMORE - The Notre Dame of Maryland men's basketball fell in their conference matchup with Clarks Summit University, falling by a score of 72-66 on Wednesday, Jan. 3.  

The Gators fell behind early in the first half, with Clarks Summit racing out to a 6-2 lead. Daraun Gray jump started the offense by hitting a 3-pointer. Jahbreco Dacosta tied the game at, converting a three-point play. NDMU continued to match the Defenders point for point, with Jalen Yates hitting a 3-pointer to keep the game tied. Later in the half, the Gators took their first lead of the game when newcomer Tristan Alvarez hit a 3-pointer making the score 18-17. The teams traded the lead back-and-forth with Marquis James and Jermaine Koger Jr. putting the Gators ahead by three. The Defenders answered back surging back in front in the final seconds of the half. NDMU had one final possession and Jackson Pugh found an open Koger Jr. for a layup sending the Gators into the break with a 31-30 lead. 

The Defenders quickly recaptured the lead in the second half, using a 14-4 take a nine-point lead five minutes into the half. Trailing by 12, NDMU tried to battle back with K'Won Johnson knocked down a jumper and then swiped a steal helping the Gators close within eight. Yates added another transition layup to close back within six. NDMU struggled to cut into the deficit but made one last push down the stretch. In the final minute, James came away with a steal, finding Johnson in transition to pull within two. The Gators could not pull any closer, falling 72-66.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Koger Jr. led the Gators in scoring finishing the game with 12 points on 4-6 shooting from the field. 

  • Johnson also scored 12 points in his return to the court to go along with three steals. 

  • James had his best career outing posting a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. 

  • Yates hit two 3-pointers, finishing with 10 points. 

  • The Gators won the battle on the glass, holding a 40-39 edge in rebounds.  

  • The Defenders were led by Courtenay Houston who scored 14 points. 

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will continue United East play, traveling to face Cairn University on Saturday, Jan. 6. The tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM
