Washington, DC- The Notre Dame of Maryland University Men's Basketball team faced a tough test against Division I American University, ultimately falling 97-52 in a game that highlighted the variation between the programs but also showcased the Gators' resilience and depth.
The Gators came out with energy in the first half, shooting a respectable 48.1% from the field and keeping pace with the Eagles early on. Despite their efforts, American University's size and athleticism allowed them to pull away as the half progressed, capitalizing on second-chance points and turnovers to build a substantial lead.
NDMU found success regardless, scoring 24 points close to the basket over the course of the game. Corwin Holland II provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, including two three-pointers, while K'Won Johnson contributed 8 points on efficient 3-of-6 shooting.
The second half proved more challenging for the Gators as fatigue set in. NDMU's shooting dropped to 21.4%, and they struggled to connect from beyond the arc, going 0-for-7 in the final 20 minutes. The Eagles, meanwhile, continued their offensive onslaught, extending their lead with precision passing and fast-break opportunities.
Despite the difficulties, the Gators showed grit and determination. Freshman Amari Bell made an impact in limited minutes, scoring 5 points and drawing fouls to earn trips to the free-throw line. Defensively, the Gators recorded 13 steals, with Chandler Johnson and Jahbreco Dacosta each nabbing three. Ultimately, American University claimed victory settling the match final score 97-52.
