Box Score Chambersburg, Pa - The Notre Dame of Maryland men's basketball team concluded its season by falling to Wilson College at the buzzer by a score of 76-75 on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The Gators grabbed an early 5-2 advantage when Dezmyn Nicholson swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Marquis James extended the lead swiping a steal, scoring a layup in transition and drawing a foul to earn a three-point play. James made the score 15-9 in favor of the Gators, powering in a layup in traffic. Wilson College answered back, going on a 7-0 run to recapture the lead. The teams then traded the lead, with a 3-pointer from Jalen Yates putting the Gators ahead 23-22. After a basket by the Phoenix, Jackson Pugh connected from beyond the arc. Mike Duffy pushed the lead to four, pulling in an offensive rebound and putting it back in the basket. Yates nailed another 3-pointer and Duffy added another layup, giving NDMU a 35-28 advantage. Yates continued his hot shooting from beyond the arc, hitting his third 3-pointer of the half to keep the Gators ahead by seven. Pugh hit one more pull up jump shot, giving NDMU a 40-31 lead at the half.
NDMU kept rolling in the second half, after Cole Matthews hit a pair of free throws, K'Won Johnson hit a pull up jumper making the score 44-34. Yates kept his rhythm from beyond the arc, hitting his fourth 3-pointer of the game. Yates then reeled off five-straight points, hitting another 3-pointer to go ahead by 11 points. Several possessions later, he hit another 3-pointer pushing the lead 13-points. Wilson College began to battle back, going on a 10-4 to close within nine points with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Johnson halted the run, drilling a 3-pointer from the wing, to keep NDMU ahead by nine. Duffy answered a Wilson basket, with a layup remain ahead by nine. The Phoenix continued to fight back, going on a 6-2 run to close within five points with 1:24 remaining in the game. Wilson tied the game at 73 with :10 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Gators had a chance to regain the lead. Johnson caught the in bounds pass and stormed to the basket, converting a twisting layup to give the Gators a 75-73 lead with 1.0 remaining. Wilson would convert a buzzer beater, earning the victory.
