Women's Basketball Falls in Regular Season Finale

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team fell to Wilson College in their regular season finale by a score of 63-53 on Wednesday, Feb. 14.  

The Gators jumped out to an early 6-2 lead with Bethani Newbold and Chantel Curry converting layups in transition. Alexis Jones added a layup in the paint, keeping the team ahead by three points. After four-straight points by Wilson College, Hillary Howard knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put NDMU back in front. Kathryn DeGrange and Amaya Durham knocked down shots to close out the opening quarter, giving the Gators a 16-11 lead heading into the second quarter. Durham continued the Gators momentum early in the second quarter, swishing her second 3-pointer of the game. The Gators maintained the lead throughout the quarter with Sariyah Waller finishing a layup in transition to give the Gators a 25-19 lead. Howard connected on four straight free throws to push NDMU's lead to nine points. Wilson scored the final four points of the quarter to close within five at the half.  

Wilson College got off to a fast start in the third quarter, opening on a 13-0 run to build an eight-point lead. The Gators tried to fight back with Elena Rodriguez hitting a jump shot and a pair of free throws. Waller knocked down a jumper, closing back within three heading into the fourth quarter. The Phoenix pulled away in the fourth quarter, leading by as many as 13 points on their way to a 63-53 victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Howard finished the game with 15 points along with six rebounds. 

  • Amya Durham added 14 points, going 2-4 from beyond the arc.  

  • Newbold and Curry each recorded six points. 

  • The Phoenix were led by Jewel Torres who scored 21 points. 

WHO'S NEXT? 
The road to the United East Women's Basketball Championship runs through Baltimore, as the Gators have clinched the top seed in the Skye Division and will host Divisional Semifinals against the lowest remaining seed on Monday, Feb. 19.
