Gators Outlast Defenders in Road Matchup

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team bounced back from their first conference defeat, taking down Clarks Summit University by a score of 47-38 victory on Saturday, Feb. 3.  

The Gators took an early 6-2 lead after Alexis Jones finished a layup in traffic. Jones added two more baskets before Elena Rodriguez drilled a jumper to make the score 13-7. NDMU continued to pull away in the second quarter, with Chantel Curry converting a layup in transition to stretch the lead back to eight. The Defenders answered back, rattling off six straight points to close back within two points. Bethani Newbold halted the run, swishing a 3-pointer from the wing. Curry kept the momentum going, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the span of a minute to push the lead back to nine. The teams traded points in the final minute, with NDMU holding a 28-21 lead at the break.  

NDMU struggled on the offensive end of the floor in the third quarter, scoring only one point in the first six minutes of the half. The Gators hit a couple of free throws in the closing minutes of the quarter, clinging to a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Amya Durham jump started the Gators offense on thier teams first possession of the fourth quarter, hitting a 3-pointer. Hillary Howard then converted a pair of layups pushing NDMU's advantage back to eight. Newbold and Curry closed out the game by converting layups down the stretch to secure the 47-38 victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Curry led the Gators in scoring, finishing the game with 13 points along with five rebounds and three assists. 

  • Jones reached double figures, scoring 12 points while also grabbing nine rebounds.  

  • Newbold and Howard each led the Gators in rebounds, pulling in 10 apiece.  

  • Clarks Summit was led in scoring by Keilani Araniva who scored 16 points 

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will return home to face Cairn University on Monday, Feb. 5. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
