Little River, SC– The Notre Dame of Maryland University softball team opened its season in North Myrtle Beach, SC, defeating Saint Joseph's (LI) in game one by a score of 11-3. The Gators built an early lead in game two against FDU-Florham, but could not stop a late rally, falling 6-4.
GAME 1
The Gators started the season off by scoring in the top of the first inning. Anabelle Hafner worked a lead-off walk and then swiped second and third bases to put herself in scoring position. Jessie Leatherwood ripped a single up the middle, scoring Hafner to put NDMU ahead 1-0. The Eagles fought back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
NDMU retook the lead in the top of the third inning. With runners on second and third, Julianna Leatherwood blasted a single through the right-side, driving in both runs. Lilyian Hafner extended the lead, smashing a single up the middle that scored Leatherwood. The Gators worked counts in the fourth inning, drawing six walks that resulted in two more runs.
Saint Joseph's (LI) fought back scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 6-3. NDMU slammed the door shut in the fifth inning, with Candace Forgach-Aguilar and Ju. Leatherwood delivering singles with runners on base, resulting in five more runs. Je. Leatherwood then closed out the win with a 1-2-3 inning, securing the mercy rule victory.

GAME 2
The Gators traded runs with FDU-Florham in the first inning. A. Hafner worked a walk and after stealing second base, moved into scoring position. She then took an aggressive lead, drawing a throw error that allowed her to score and tie the game at one. NDMU once again found themselves trailing in the third inning, when A. Hafner recorded her first collegiate hit, launching a triple to left field. Je. Leatherwood brought her home, lifting a sacrifice fly to center field to level the score at two.
In the circle for the Gators, Gena Donalds kept NDMU off balance, throwing 5.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits. NDMU took the lead in the fourth inning. Forgach-Aguilar led off the inning with a single through the left side and then stole second base. Ju. Leatherwood then crushed a triple right field, plating a run. Moments later, Ju. Leatherwood would score on a wild pitch. The Devils made one final push, plating four runs in the top of the seventh to storm back and earn the 6-4 victory.
