Gators Take Down Waynesburg

BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's lacrosse team picked up a decisive home victory, defeating Waynesburg University by a score of 20-6 on Monday, March 25.  

Jade Stewart started the game off with bang, netting her 100th career goal just :48 seconds into the game. Stewart slashed to the net firing a hook shot into the back of the net. Waynesburg would level the score at one before Stewart scored three-straight goals to put NDMU ahead 4-1. Averee Radonovich came up from her normal defensive position, took a pass from Emma Alascia and scored her first goal of the season. Alascia closed out the quarter, scoring a free-position shot.  

NDMU continued building their lead in the second quarter. Sarah Naje answered a Jackets goal, capitalizing on a free-position opportunity to make the score 7-2. Emily Funez then found the back of the net, scoring off a great feed from Sarah Generoso. Funez then found Ariana Rodriguez in transition and Rodriguez netted her first career goal. Less than a minute later, Rodriguez gathered a loose ball in front of the net and fired it for her second goal of the game. Alascia closed out the half, scoring on a free-position shot.  

Makayla Reyes started the second half off strong, picking up a loose ball in the offensive third, juking a defender, and launching a shot into the back of the net. Stewart then scored two straight goals, pushing NDMU's lead to 12 goals. Emily Funez closed out the quarter, scoring an outstanding behind the head shot. The Gators continued to score at will in the fourth quarter, with Generoso, Alascia and Radonovich each finding the back of the net. Madison Perryman netted her first career goal in the final minutes of the game, batting a loose ball into the back of the net, securing the 20-6 victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Stewart had her best game of the season, scoring six goals and dishing out four assists. With her first goal of the game, Stewart reached the 100-goal mark.  

  • Alascia scored four goals and dished an assist. In addition, Alascia collected nine ground balls.  

  • Funez scored twice including a highlight reel behind the back shot.  

  • Radonovich struck twice coming up from her defensive position.  

  • Rodriguez scored her first two career goals. 

  • The Jackets were led by Waverly Lorne who scored four goals.  

WHO'S NEXT 
The Gators will open conference play by hosting Wilson College on Saturday Mar. 30. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM. NDMU will celebrate senior day before the game.
