Gators Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short

CHESTERTOWN, MD — A strong fourth-quarter rally wasn't enough for Notre Dame of Maryland on Thursday night, as the Gators dropped a 45–36 decision on the road at Washington College.

The Gators (0–3) struggled to find offensive rhythm through the first three quarters, scoring just 17 points over 30 minutes before erupting for 19 in the fourth. Despite cutting a 14-point deficit to as little as six late, Washington answered key moments to keep the game out of reach.

Amani Watts powered Notre Dame with a team-high 10 points and eight rebounds, coming alive in the final frame with several aggressive drives and key second-chance plays. Madison Simmons added nine points, including a perfect 4-for-4 stretch at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Marecia Barnett chipped in seven points and four rebounds while playing a team-high 37 minutes, and Allison Holman controlled the boards with 10 rebounds to go with two points and an assist.

Offense was at a premium for both sides early, as Notre Dame shot just 23.6 percent from the field and 3-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Gators' defensive effort, however, kept them within striking distance, forcing 16 turnovers and winning stretches of the rebounding battle.

Washington (2–1) was led by Taylor Shane, who scored a game-high 16 points off the bench, and Kaitlyn Boggs, who added 10. The Shorewomen used a decisive 14-3 third quarter to create the separation they needed.

Notre Dame found its best basketball in the fourth quarter, outscoring Washington 19–14 and attacking the paint with purpose. Watts and Simmons combined for 13 of the team's final-period points as the Gators trimmed the lead down to six multiple times. But Washington responded each time, including a crucial three from Shane in the final two minutes that halted the comeback bid.

The Gators will head back to Baltimore for their home opener on Saturday, November 15 at 12 PM when they host Eastern Mennonite. NDM has won the last two meetings between the two teams including a thrilling 72-67 win in the 2024-25 campaign.
