Softball opens United East play with sweep of Keystone

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Notre Dame of Maryland University softball team started off its United East schedule with a sweep of Keystone at Weinberg-Fine Stadium on Sunday.

In the first game, strong pitching led the Gators to a 5-1 win, while in game two, it was power that ruled the day as the Gators (5-6, 2-0 United East) defeated the Giants (2-8, 0-2 United East) 13-10.

In the opener, Anabelle Hafner scored on an RBI groundout by Eleanor Flores in the first for a 1-0 lead. Julianna Leatherwood then homered in the third for a 2-0 lead, followed by a Scarlett Miller single in the fourth that scored Annabelle Shumski.

Miller would later score on an RBI double to left from Hafner, with Hafner later scoring on a double by Flores as part of a three-run fourth.

Hafner, Flores, and Leatherwood each had two hits in the win, with Anabelle Hafner scoring two runs.

Malorie Gogel got the win, moving to 3-3. In a complete game performance, she allowed just five hits and one earned run. She struck out one and walked two.

In game two, Notre Dame rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the third by scoring nine in the bottom of the frame. Miller and Raina Burns had two-run hits in that inning.

Keystone would rally to get within one at 10-9 in the sixth, before the Gators put three more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth to take a 13-9 lead. Raegan Perkes had a two-run double in that inning.

Leatherwood went 4-for-4 in the nightcap, just missing the cycle. Miller had three hits and three RBI, while Anabelle Hafner, Claire Smith, Lilyian Hafner, Perkes and Burns each getting two hits in
the win.

Perkes got the win, moving to 2-0. She struck out two and walked two in five innings of work. Leatherwood pitched two innings in relief, fanning two and issuing two free passes.
