Wilkes Races Past Gators 18-3

Edwardsville, PA - Wilkes raced out to an early lead and never looked back Friday afternoon, defeating Notre Dame of Maryland 18–3 in non-conference women's lacrosse action in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania. 

Wilkes controlled the game from the opening draw, scoring five goals in the first quarter and adding eight more in the second to take a commanding 13–1 halftime lead. Morgan Hettesheimer opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, sparking a run that also included goals from Madyson Martinez, Nina-Lily Veale and Taylor Sparks. 

Notre Dame broke through late in the second quarter when Soliery Baez Vergara converted a free-position opportunity at the 9:33 mark, putting the Gators on the board and trimming the deficit to 9–1 at the time. 

The Gators showed more offensive rhythm after halftime. Ariana Rodriguez added another free-position goal midway through the third quarter, and Cailyn Motta scored in the fourth as Notre Dame finished with three goals on seven shots. 

Goalkeeper Leah Hasberry played the full 60 minutes for Notre Dame and recorded 10 saves while facing heavy pressure from a Wilkes attack that produced 36 shots and 18 goals. 

Wilkes was led by Sparks, Hettesheimer, Alexis Guttilla and Halie Albright, who each scored three goals, while Veale added two goals and three assists. 

Notre Dame fell to 0-2 on the season, while Wilkes improved to 5-0 and will try to get into the win column when they travel to Centenary University on Monday, March 9 at 4 PM.
