BALTIMORE, MD - Brandy Noel connected on a second effort to give visiting Hood a 3-2 double overtime field hockey victory over College of Notre Dame Monday afternoon. The Gators, who are now 0-3 in overtime contests on the year, slip to 1-13 overall on the season while the Blazers improved to 4-9.
Hood's Jen Graham got the scoring started just 4:23 into the game off a penalty corner pass from Noel to give the Blazers the early lead. The Gators had 13 penalty corners in the first half, but weren't able to connect on any of them until time expired. Hood was called for a foul on a penalty stroke with no time remaining in the first half. Senior Whitley Noel (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion Area) took the penalty stroke for the Gators and beat Hood goalie Anne Marie Hantman on her right side to knot the score at one heading into the half.
The Blazers went on to take their second lead of the game 13:22 into the second period when Katelyn Bramkamp was able to take a long drive from teammate Jen Graham and beat Gator goalie Jessica Maier (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) for the 2-1 lead.
It wouldn't take long for Notre Dame to respond as freshman Rachel Jones (Westminster, MD/Francis Scott Key) netted her second goal of the season after she was able to take a shot past a number of bodies in front of the Blazer cage.
Both squads would battle with the score knotted at 2-2 until the overtime period. Hood and Notre Dame had ample chances in the first seven on seven overtime, with Hood getting off five shots and Notre Dame compiling six shots in the period. Both goalies kept the score tied over the first overtime with Hantman making four stops and Maier three.
Just 4:30 into the second overtime Brandy Noel was able to beat the Notre Dame defense down field. Noel's first shot was stopped by Maier, however, she was able to get her own rebound and get her second shot past Maier for the win.
Maier finished the game with seven saves while Hantman made nine stops. Notre Dame accumulated 19 penalty corners in the game to Hood's 13. The Gators also beat the Blazers on the shots battle with 18 to the visitors 14.
The Gators will play their final home game of the 2009 season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Neumann. Notre Dame's five seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the game.
