Field Hockey Falls Short Against Neumann

BALTIMORE, MD - Visiting Neumann University played spoiler on College of Notre Dame's senior day, defeating the hosts by a 6-0 score Saturday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) field hockey contest. The Gators dropped to 1-14 overall and end their 2009 CSAC campaign with an 0-8 record. The Knights improved to 7-7 overall and 6-2 in CSAC play with the win.

Melissa Hood got Neumann on board early in the third minute, scoring off a save that was rebounded right to her. Callie Emel followed with two goals of her own to push the score to 3-0. Emel scored her first goal in the 21st minute after Notre Dame had threatened to score several times between goals. Emel's second tally came with 3:11 remaining in the first half off an assist from Lauren Hood. Kelsey Mazur followed with a goal just 21 seconds later off an assist by Melissa Hood.

Neumann controlled possession in the second half and was able to get two more goals before time ran out. Melissa Malick scored an unassisted goal 1:32 into the second half while Mazur followed with her second goal off an assist from Sarah Diener.

Senior Jessica Maier (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) made five saves in the final home game of her career. Maggie Carpenter made six saves in the win for Neumann.

Notre Dame's five seniors, Ashley Demski, Maier, Nicole McFeaters, Whitley Noel and Caitlan Quinn were all recognized prior to the start of the game for their contributions to Notre Dame athletics and the field hockey team.

The Gators will play their final game of the season on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Wilson.
