Gophers Defeat Gators

Baltimore, MD – College of Notre Dame Field Hockey closed out a three game week on Friday afternoon when they hosted non-conference opponent Goucher College.

Before the start of the game we honored two seniors Jill Lieberman (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Alysa Younger (Marbury, MD/ Henry R. Lackey) for their dedication to the program over the last four years. Lieberman and Younger have demonstrated strong leadership both on and off the field during their field hockey careers at College of Notre Dame.

The Gators played a well balanced game, with strong defensive play and attacking play that developed from the defensive and midfield players. Sophomore Emily Langton (Mays Landing, NJ/Holy Spirit) made several huge saves early in the game to keep the Gophers off the scoreboard. Eighteen minutes into the half Goucher’s Eden Fitzkee found the back of the cage, it give the Gophers a 1-0 advantage. College of Notre Dame was not fazed by the goal and worked the ball of the field on multiple occasions. Nicole Walters (Joppa, MD/Mercy) made a defensive save with ten minutes remaining in the half.

College of Notre Dame continued their attacking style of play in the second half. Sarah Morris (Harrington, DE/Polytech) and Rachel Jones (Westminster, MD/Francis Scott Key) dribbled the ball up the field on numerous occasions, with one run earning a penalty corner. Jones sent a fabulous corner just in front of the cage, but the Gators did not finish their opportunity. Goucher tacked on one more goal with four minutes remaining in regulation.

Langton made 24 saves in seventy minutes of work.
