Baltimore, Md. – September 1, 2011 – The Notre Dame of Maryland soccer team opened the 2011 season with a 7-0 loss to local rival Goucher College.
The Gophers scored just five minutes into the contest when Maeve Downey was able to capitalize on
Mindy Daughtery’s deflection off the save.
Ten minutes later,
Kate Donadio (Reisterstown/Franklin) and
Michelle Phillips (Salisbury/James M. Bennett) connected in the midfield to set up
Ashley Cumberland (Baltimore/Kenwood) on the Gator attack.
Kelsey Kempf (Huntingtown / Huntingtown) continued Notre Dame’s offensive push with three shots, all turned away by Gopher keeper Regan Foy.
Goucher had back to back corner kicks with ten minutes to play in the first half and Sherlanda Buskey was able to get off two shots, with Daugherty coming up with key saves to keep the score 1-0 at the half.
After a tightly contested first half, the visitors tacked on five goals in a fifteen minute span, including back to back goals from Buskey and a hat trick from Katherine Matthew-Parker. Sarah Eaby also scored for the Gophers, while Foy was credited with six saves. Isa Cidral did not face a shot in the final thirteen minutes.
Daugherty (Hampstead/North Carroll) finished the game with 9 saves, while
Heather Lancellotti (Perry Hall/Perry Hall) picked up three saves between the pipes.
The Gators travel to Morristown, N.J. Saturday, September 3 for a 1:00 contest with the College of St. Elizabeth.
