Morales Ties School Record In Field Hockey's 5-3 Victory Over Sweet Briar

Box Score Baltimore, Md. -- Freshman Megan Morales (Joppa, Md./Catholic) tied a school record for goals in a game as the Notre Dame of Maryland University field hockey team defeated Sweet Briar College 5-3 for their second win over the Vixen this season.

Morales would finish with five goals on 11 shots to pace the offense. Junior Erika Deppenschmidt (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia School for Girls)chipped in with three assists, and also added three shots to the effort. Senior Kelsey Jones (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) notched three shots as well. Freshman Peace Ani (Windsor Mill, Md./Western Tech) also chipped in with her first career assist.

In goal, junior De'Ja Martin (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) posted 11 saves while facing 17 shots. Deppenschmidt aided the defense with two defensive saves.

Morales gave the Gators an early lead by knocking in her first goal in the 13th minute off a penalty corner, taking the pass from Deppenschmidt. Sweet Briar awould then answer with two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

To open the second half, Deppenschmidt again passed to Morales on a penalty corner in the 45th minute to tie the game. Five minutes later, Sweet Briar re-took the lead by taking advantage of a Notre Dame own goal, grabbing a 3-2 lead with just over 20 minutes left in the game.

It wouldn't take long for Morales and Deppenschmidt to answer, scoring just under two minutes later on their third penalty corner connection to tie the score at 3-3.

Morales followed it by scoring her fourth goal of the game, and ninth goal of the season, in the 61st minute to give the Gators a 4-3 lead. In the 65th minute, Ani found Morales who dodged around a Sweet Briar defender and knocked the ball into the goal to give the Gators breathing room, and the eventual 5-3 win.

The win gives Notre Dame a second win over the Vixen, having defeated them at Sweet Briar 5-4 in overtime earlier in the season. The Gators will return to action on Saturday as they return to Colonial States Athletic Conference play by travelling to Keystone College.
