Soccer Slow Start Too Much To Overcome

Box Score Langhorne, Pa.  --  Cairn University scored two goals in the first 18 minutes which proved too much to overcome as the Notre Dame of Maryland University soccer team fell to the Highlanders in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.

Senior Lauren Santi (Accokeek, Md./Elizabeth Ann Seton) scored her fourth goal of the season while freshman Meghan Conner (Huntingtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) notched her league-leading 16th goal.

Junior Brittany Smith (Parkville, Md./Howard Community College) and freshman Lyndsey Rehak (Baltimore, Md./Redeemer Classical Christian) posted assists in the effort.

Freshman goalkeeper Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale) finished the contest with eight saves.

Trailing 2-0 entering the second half, Santi took control of the ball near midfield, and after dribbling the ball up field, blasted the ball past the Cairn keeper to narrow the deficit to 2-1 in the 49th minute.

However, the Highlanders would answer with two more goals to take a 4-1 advantage.  After the hosts scored in the 81st minute, Rehak booted a corner kick to Smith, who found Conner for a header in the 82nd minute to again reduce the difference.  But it wouldn't be enough as they contest went final with a 4-2 score.

The Gators drop to 8-6-1 overall and will look to bounce back against CSAC power Marywood University tomorrow.
