Sweet Briar, Va. -- Freshman
Megan Morales (Joppa, Md./Catholic) scored her first career goal just three minutes into overtime to give the Notre Dame of Maryland University field hockey team a 5-4 win over Sweet Briar College for their first victory of the season.
Morales would open the scoring early, as she knocked in a goal just 4:34 into the games. The Vixens would respond by scoring three goals in a span of 11 minutes to take a 3-1 lead at the 16 minute mark.
Senior
Kelsey Jones (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) would narrow the game by scoring her first of the season in the 20th minute to bring the score to 3-2 as they entered the break.
Jones would then find the net again early in the second half to tie the game at 3-3 in the 39th minute. Junior
Erika Deppenschmidt (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia School for Girls) followed to give the Gators their first lead of the season four minutes later, scoring her first of the season in the 43rd minute off a pass from Morales.
A little more than two minutes later, the hosts would tie the score at 4-4 by scoring their only goal of the second half.
The two teams would then fight through a scoreless 15 minutes to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Jones pass the ball to Morales, who would knock in the game winner to give Notre Dame the 5-4 victory.
In the contest, Jones would finish with a game-high six shots, while
Freshman Kayla Becker (Plantation, Fla./South Plantation) would add four. In goal,
De'Ja Martin (Salisburg, Md./Wicomico) would post eight saves.
With the win, the Gators improve to 1-1 on the year and will now return to action on Thursday as they host in-state rival Hood College on Alumnae Field.
