Field Hockey Hosts Griffins in Senior Day Game

BALTIMORE, Md. – The field hockey team welcomes the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins to campus today for a noon matchup. Prior to today's game, the club will honor seniors Erika Deppenschmidt and De'Ja Martin, as the girls suit up for the last two times on home turf.

Deppenschmidt appeared in 42 games for the Gators and started in 42. Over the last four years, the senior has tallied a club high nine defensive saves and nine points, on two goals and five assists. Deppenschmidt was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Sportsmanship team in 2013 and 2015, while also earning Dean's List all four years.

Martin joined the club in 2015 and currently ranks 17th in NCAA Division III and second in the CSAC with 10.5 saves per game. In the last two years, Martin has recorded 239 total saves and this past season, the team voted the senior Most Improved, after notching a club high 141 saves.

The Gators are 1-9 on the season and winless in conference action. They have a tough matchup against Gwynedd Mercy today, as the Griffins hold the top spot in the CSAC at 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Gwynedd Mercy suffered a 1-0 loss on Wednesday to Washington College, snapping a four game win streak for the Griffins. The Shorewomen scored eight minutes in to the game and held the Griffins scoreless the rest of the way.

If the Gators want a shot at the upset, they will have to focus in on junior Melissa Russo, who currently leads the CSAC with 15 goals and is second in the league in points with 35 on the year. Notre Dame will also look to stop junior Brianna O'Connell, as the junior sits three spots behind Russo with nine goals.

Sophomore Megan Morales has been the Gators' go to scorer this season with a club high four goals, to go along with one assist for a total of nine points. Freshman Jessica Wells has also impressed with two goals and one helper, good for five points. Martin has recorded 10 starts in net for the Gators and is two saves shy of 100 on the year.
